Three Troubling Days

For the second straight Games a horse had to be euthanized after being injured in the cross-country portion of three-day team eventing. Belgian Joris Vanspringel's mount, Over and Over, was put down after hitting a 43-inch-high log fence and fracturing his leg.

The controversy-plagued competition ended last week with a scoring change, and then a reversal of that change, on a penalty not assessed to Germany. But after an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the Germans dropped from first to fourth, elevating France to the gold, Britain to silver and the U.S. to bronze. Also as a result of the decision, the U.S.'s Kimberly Severson, 30 (inset),went from bronze to silver in the individual event.
