Well-schooled

U.S. colleges helped develop some of the top international swimmers at the Games: At least 14 current or former NCAA swimmers won medals for their native countries, including Arizona alum Roland Schoeman, the star of the South African team that swamped the U.S. in the men's 4√ó100 freestyle relay.

Another U.S.-trained international, Duje Draganja of Croatia (inset), proudly displayed his school colors by competing in his Cal swim cap. After being outtouched by Gary Hall Jr. of the U.S. for the 50 freestyle gold, Draganja, who trains with Hall in Miami, was asked how it felt not to hear the Croatian national anthem. "The American anthem plays for me too," he said. --K.A.
