Lions Stiffen Against the Run
In their season opener the Lions snapped a league-record 24game road losing streak, and in beating the Falcons 17--10 on Sunday, they won their second straight away from home. Facing the NFL's top rushing offense, Detroit allowed only 94 yards on 27 Atlanta carries; feature back Warrick Dunn was limited to 44 yards on 18 attempts. Run-stopping tackles Shaun Rogers and Dan Wilkinson anchor the Lions' defensive line, which Atlanta running backs coach Ollie Wilson called "as good a front as we've faced this year." ... Duce Staley, signed as a free agent in the off-season to shore up the Steelers' ground game, ran for 117 yards in a 34--23 victory over the Browns. It was the third straight game in which Staley had gone over the 100-yard mark--and the first time he has achieved that feat in his eight-year career. Last season Pittsburgh got a total of two 100-yard games from its running backs.... Coming off their bye week, the Seahawks blew a 17-point lead in the final 5:34 of regulation, then lost to the Rams 33--27 in overtime. Under Mike Holmgren, Seattle is 6--0 in games leading up to the bye, 0--6 in games following it.
