College Champs

California, with 25 Division I schools, rises above the rest in the alltime accumulation of collegiate laurels. Texas, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania have been big-time players; Mississippi and South Dakota are the only states whose schools haven't won an NCAA title

These totals are for both men and women, so Tennesseans can thank Pat Summitt (right) for all six of its titles. If you can't recall Wyoming's cutting down the nets, you're not alone. The NIT was once the most prominent postseason tournament, and in 1943 the Cowboys beat Georgetown in the NCAAs while St. John's won the NIT.

NCAA Division I Football Titles

Back in the day, the power was up north. Before 1961 Minnesota (led by QB Sandy Stephens in '60, right) won four AP titles, but the South has since risen. Florida schools, which had not won a title before Miami's in 1983, now have eight. This listing also includes Division IAA, in which Montana and Idaho won their crowns.

NCAA
Division I Titles, All Sports

While football and basketball get the most airtime, they're not the sports that fill trophy cases. Anson Dorrance's North Carolina women's soccer team has brought nearly twice as many titles (17) to the state as its noted basketball teams (9). Wrestling (38) and golf (11) have given Oklahoma more titles than its football teams (7). The sport that has brought the most titles to Nebraska? Gymnastics (8).

California's domination derives from its mastery of all sports. The success of UCLA basketball (11 titles) and USC baseball (12) certainly helps, but more significant is its success in sports that reflect its climate and culture: tennis (64), volleyball (46), water polo (38) and swimming (29).

Some states are truly dependent on one school or sport. In New Jersey, Princeton's golf and lacrosse teams have collected all of the state's 21 titles. Oregon's and Arkansas's totals consist almost entirely of track and field and cross-country titles. Iowa's count is boosted by its 30 wrestling crowns. And without the seven rifle titles won by the Nanooks of the University of Alaska--Fairbanks (above), our 49th state would be left out in the cold.
