Fox delivered a Super Bowl broadcast memorable more for what it didn't have (bare breasts and controversy) than what it did (solid commentary by smooth professionals). Joe Buck, Cris Collinsworth and Troy Aikman, calling their first Super Bowl for the network, offered strong opinions, especially when it came to the Eagles' clock mismanagement in the fourth quarter. "How many Philadelphia fans are screaming at the TV, saying 'Hurry up'?" asked Buck, who later added that the Eagles looked worn out. "There's no excuse for being worn out," said Aikman, the MVP of Super Bowl XXVII. The much-hyped Turf Cam had as much impact as forgotten Eagles receiver Freddie Mitchell. The only semimemorable shot from the dozen cameras embedded around Alltell Stadium was a third-quarter view from beneath Patriots long snapper Lonie Paxton. Eight hours of pregame programming featured an overabundance of American Idol judge Randy Jackson, but one moment did work: Former presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton giving predictions. Bush Sr. picked the Pats. Clinton said the point spread was too big and the game would depend on the Eagles' defense, but declined to offer a winner. "It's hard for me because both those towns voted for me twice," he said. --R.D.
