Yvonne Mensah
SURREY, B.C. > Track and Field
Mensah, a sophomore sprinter at Illinois, won each of the four events she competed in at the Central Collegiate Championships, in Champaign. She set a meet record in the 60-meter hurdles (8.23) and was named Big Ten athlete of the week.
Patrick McGinnis
COLORADO SPRINGS > Soccer
McGinnis, a senior forward at Colorado College, was named the Division III player of the year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. He led the nation (all NCAA divisions) in goals per game (1.95) and points per game (4.30) for the season.
Cynthia Barboza
LONG BEACH, CALIF. > Volleyball
Cynthia, a senior outside hitter and middle blocker at Wilson Classical High, became the first two-time Gatorade national volleyball player of the year, earning the award for the second straight season. She ended her high school career with 2,145 kills and 152 aces.
Michael Cutherbertson
SCOTTSBORO, ALA. > Wrestling
Michael, a senior at Scottsboro High, set a state record when he won his fifth Class 5A Alabama championship with a victory in the 160-pound final. Michael was undefeated in 48 matches this season, and he was 175-4 during his high school career.
Erin Kegley
INVER GROVE HEIGHTS, MINN. > Hockey
Kegley, a sophomore forward at Wisconsin-Superior, was named Northern Collegiate Hockey Association player of the week after scoring seven goals and making three assists in two Yellowjackets victories. She leads the NCAA's Division III in goals per game (1.28).
Joe Cox
CHARLOTTE > Football
Joe, a senior quarterback at Independence High, was named Old Spice Red Zone national high school player of the year after passing for 4,509 yards and a state-record 66 touchdowns. This season he led the 15--0 Patriots to their fifth straight N.C. 4AA championship.
