WHO'S Hot/WHO'S Not
WHO'S Hot
Tony Richardson
One day after playing for victorious AFC in NFL Pro Bowl, Chiefs fullback went on weeklong relief mission to Sri Lanka, where he hauled rice bags and weighed sugar rations for tsunami victims. He ran into other NFLers (such as Giants receiver Amani Toomer), snapped photos and recorded it all in a journal on kcchiefs.com.
Fenway Faithful
Red Sox are scheduled to visit the White House this week, ace Curt Schilling's ankle is on the mend (two bullpen sessions, good progress), and fans just learned that they will see their boys receive their championship rings on Opening Day--right in front of those &*%$# Yankees.
Dawn Staley
Same week the WNBA point guard re-signed with the Sting, the Temple coach guided her No. 16 women's hoops team to its 21st straight win, closing an unbeaten Atlantic 10 season. Even before last week's men's hoops debacle (page 19) a Philadelphia Daily News headline read STALEY, NOT CHANEY, NOW HAS THE BEST SHOW IN PHILADELPHIA.
David Beckham
Life is sweet! A few days after soccer's megaceleb became a new dad (he and wife Posh had their third son, Cruz), he was out with Beyoncé on one arm, J.Lo on the other, promoting the Pepsi ad the three will appear in this month.
Pennsylvania
College hoops team dominated Ivy League and was first men's squad to clinch spot in NCAAs. NBA's Sixers got five-time All-Star Chris Webber for a playoff run, moving Allen Iverson to say he was--brace yourself--eager to practice. And Pittsburgh's NFL kingpin, RB Jerome Bettis, silenced retirement talk by signing a one-year deal to stay in the Steel City.
WHO'S Not
Bode Miller
Lost weekend for hell-bent New Hampshire schusser: He slid off course in last Saturday's giant slalom, he crashed into a gate in Sunday's slalom, and what was once a 191-point lead in the World Cup standings has slipped to 31, threatening Miller's chances to become first U.S. man to win circuit in 22 years.
Patriots Faithful
Fan favorite Ty Law is out (released), and gouging is in. Ticket prices were hiked 20%, and while Pats announced they'll relax no-transfer policy on season tickets--team got bad press last year after a ticket holder died and Pats demanded the tickets back from his cancer-stricken son--it comes at a price. Transferring to family member costs $2,500-$5,000 a seat.
Deion Sanders
Forget prime time. Heck, forget prime beef. The man who has played in a World Series and Super Bowl, who was a CBS analyst and last year made a comeback as a Ravens CB, is doing infomercials for Deion Sanders' Hot Dog Express, which lets you cook 12 frankfurters on metal rollers.
David Beckham
Work is rough! A few days after being sent home from practice with flu symptoms, Real Madrid star arrived at a Coruna, Spain, hotel before last Saturday's game against rival Deportivo and had an egg thrown at him by a fan. (It missed.) Then, in a steady rain, he and mates suffered a 2-0 loss.
Kyle Shanahan
The 25-year-old son of Broncos leading man, Mike, is the Bucs' "offensive quality control coach." How's this for offensive quality? At the combine in Indy, Kyle got arrested for public intoxication after an officer found him being "belligerent and causing a scene" outside the Have a Nice Day Café.
