The GlobalFlyer is no Spirit of St. Louis, but Steve Fossett needed just 67 hours to fly it around the world, a record for a nonstop circumnavigation. Lindbergh's 1927 flight from New York to Paris: 3 31/2 hours.

And they're off! A field of 79 mushers and 1,264 dogs is racing the 1,150-mile Iditarod, which weaves through Alaska's frozen rivers and gorges.
