King, a sophomore forward at North Carolina Central, scored 12 of the Lady Eagles' 13 overtime points and set a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association tournament record with 59 points in an 84--79 win over Bowie State. She had no fouls and a team-high 13 rebounds in the game.
Matt Vacanti
PAPILLION, NEB. > Wrestling
Matt, a junior at Papillion-LaVista High, defeated Daniel Tuzson for the Class A 130-pound state championship and became the second Nebraska high school wrestler to pin every opponent (he had 35 matches) in a single season. He has three state titles and a 103--0 career record.
Mandy Kaempf
STEINBACH-HALLENBERG, GERMANY > Skiing
Kaempf, a junior Nordic skier at Alaska-Anchorage, won the women's five-kilometer classical and the 15-km freestyle titles at the NCAA men's and women's championships. She had eight wins this season, including her third West Regional title as a Seawolf.
Myles Bradley
NORWICH, CONN. > Track and Field
Myles, a senior at Norwich Free Academy, won the 55-meter hurdles and the long jump at the New England Indoor Track and Field Championships. He had the fastest time by a U.S. high school runner in the 55-meter hurdles this year (7.26) and won the long jump and high jump at the state meet.
Johanna Ellison
CLOQUET, MINN. > Hockey
Johanna, a senior goalie at Cloquet-Esko-Carlton High, had a 1.28 goals-against average and 11 shutouts as she led the Lumberjacks to the state championship finals for the second time in three years. She was The Associated Press and Duluth News Tribune's girls' hockey player of the year.
Bruce Schwab
OAKLAND > Sailing
Schwab, 44, became the first American to complete the Vendée Globe race around the world and the second to go around the world nonstop and alone in a boat. He started and ended his 109-day journey at Les Sables-d'Olonne, France, finishing ninth in a field of 20.
