Traveling Fur

PHILLIE PHANATIC, Phillies
Hoping to swing some fans over before they got hooked on the Nationals, Mr. Phanatic went to Washington last month. He carried a briefcase and wore a necktie as he shook hands, kissed babies and stomped on a Nats cap on the Washington Mall.

BILLY THE MARLIN, Marlins
Joined manager Jack McKeon, coaches, several players and some 300 fans on a three-night, four-day cruise from Miami to Cozumel, Mexico. He helped coaches give on-deck baseball clinics and found out he's better on land. "Even though I'm a fish, I got seasick," he told SI in an e-mail. "I had to wear a patch."

WALLY THE GREEN MONSTER, Red Sox
Attended post-World Series rallies in every state in New England. In December he went to Burlington, Vt., with the World Series trophy and pitcher Bronson Arroyo. Many of the 5,000 fans on hand had waited in the cold for 11 hours, holding signs that read WALLY IS MY DADDY!

JUNCTION JACK, Astros
Participated in a surprise home makeover in League City, Texas. When an inner-city teacher, his homemaker wife and their eight-year-old son left town, their kindly neighbors renovated the house, turning the garage into a master bedroom and adding a porch. When the family returned, Jack was waiting in the boy's new bedroom. "He was a huge baseball fan, and he gave Jack a big hug," says the mascot's spokesman, Dennis Bartel. "They looked at everything in his new room together: baseball ceiling fan, baseball wallpaper, baseball carpet, baseball everything. His mom was crying."

MR. MET, Mets
Attended several weddings and bar mitzvahs (he wore a tuxedo and top hat) and got hoisted in a chair during the hora more than once. In February he was flown to L.A. to film a commercial for a new PlayStation video game and got put up in the posh Viceroy hotel on the beach in Santa Monica. As if his head weren't big enough already. --Ben Reiter
