Turn for the Bettor

 Giacomo (far left), with Mike Smith aboard, is running 18th as the field of 20 moves through the first turn of the Kentucky Derby last Saturday at Churchill Downs. The 50-1 long shot caught the leaders in the stretch, however, and paid $102.60--the second-highest payoff in the 131-year history of the race (page 44).
