Six world-class mountain bikers take a reconnaissance trek from La Paz, Mexico

Earlier this month six of the world's best mountain bikers traveled to Mexico's Sea of Cortez for a far more rigorous expedition than any John Steinbeck ever envisioned. Darren Berrecloth, Robbie Bourdon, Aaron Chase, Cedric Gracia, Kyle Strait and Cameron Zink became the first riders to explore the desolate terrain outside Baja California's La Paz and on San José Island on fat tires. On their two-week trek, dubbed the Red Bull Recon, the pro riders traveled by boat, helicopter and bee-infested Jeep to jump off 15-foot drops on loose, jagged terrain. "There were some sections where the seashells stuck out of the rocks. If you fell, you'd get shredded," Chase says. "It was like big-mountain skiing on a bike. It was epic."
