Els, 35, who had surgery on the knee last Thursday at a hospital near his home in Wentworth, England, had been on a sailing vacation in the Mediterranean with his family. "Obviously the timing is unfortunate," Els said.

O'HAIR'S OFF THE HOOK

Marc O'Hair, the estranged father of Tour rookie Sean, said in a statement that he is releasing his son from two contracts that call for Sean to pay him 10% of all his earnings and repay the $2 million that Marc says he spent developing Sean's game. Sean called the release "words written on paper. I haven't read it and am not planning to."
