Vicki Keith
AMHERST ISLAND, ONT.
Keith, 44, a swimming coach, raised $184,000 and broke her own world record for the butterfly stroke by swimming 46 miles in 64 hours in Lake Ontario. The money will go toward developing a sports program for children with disabilities at the Kingston YMCA, where she coaches a competitive swim team.
Ramon Sepulveda
AUSTIN
Sepulveda, 51, a water-systems operator who has multiple sclerosis, finished the Chicago Marathon, achieving his goal of completing 12 marathons in 12 months. He also has completed the MS 150 bike ride from Austin to Houston seven times to raise money for MS research and inspire MS patients to lead active lives.
Elizabeth Denny
PROSPECT, KY.
Elizabeth, a freshman field hockey goaltender at St. Francis High who recently finished chemotherapy treatment, created cancer-awareness ribbons for ovarian, breast and childhood cancer and designed a childhood cancer bracelet for her school to sell to raise money to fight the disease.
Johnny Wilson
HILLSBOROUGH, CALIF.
Johnny, a fourth-grader at North School, swam 1.4 miles, from Alcatraz Island to San Francisco, in 68 minutes on Oct. 10, becoming one of the youngest swimmers to complete the course. He and his school friends secured pledges for the swim, which raised about $130,000 for the Red Cross Hurricane Katrina Fund.
Phil Barr
NEW YORK CITY
Barr, 23, a swimmer at Bates and a survivor of the 2003 Station nightclub fire in West Warick, R.I., rejoined the swim team and completed his senior season with 87% lung capacity. His leadership and spirit earned him the 2005 NCAA Sportsmanship Award. He helped set up the Station Family Fund to aid victims of the fire.
