Miami defensive backs Randy Phillips (left) and Brandon Meriweather gave Virginia Tech receiver Josh Morgan an unwelcome pick-me-up last Saturday in Blacksburg, Va., during the Hurricanes' 27-7 victory. The loss was the Hokies' first this season, and it dropped them two places behind No. 4 Miami in the BCS standings.
Running on Empties
Competitors trampled paper cups strewn across Fifth Avenue on Sunday during the 36th New York City Marathon (page 24). Paul Tergat of Kenya (right, upright) was the first of the 37,516 entrants to cross the finish line, edging 2004 champion Hendrick Ramaala of South Africa by .32 of a second--the narrowest margin of victory in the history of the race.
The follow-through of Ottawa winger Daniel Alfredsson left an impression on Sabres defenseman Rory Fitzpatrick in Buffalo on Nov. 2, as the scorching Senators (11-2-0 at week's end) stuck it to their Northeast Division rivals, storming to a 10-4 win behind four goals from Alfredsson.
