That 80s Show
Kobe Bryant went where only one man had gone before on Sunday in Los Angeles, pouring in more than 80 points in an NBA game (page 56). The league's leading scorer, Bryant torched Toronto for 81 in the Lakers' 122-104 victory--a total second only to Wilt Chamberlain's 100 on March 2, 1962--and then planted a kiss on his daughter, Natalia.
Hoya, Enjoya!
In a weekend full of college basketball upsets (page 75), center Roy Hibbert celebrated Georgetown's 87-84 toppling of No. 1 Duke last Saturday at the MCI Center in Washington. Blue Devils Josh McRoberts, Jamal Boykin and Martynas Pocius (inset, from left) watched their hopes of an unbeaten season vanish.
Cold Faithful
On 25 rinks marked off on frozen Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis, 116 teams--which included former NHL players and New York City firemen--competed last weekend at the first U.S. Pond Hockey Championships (page 21). The winners of the three divisions (open, women's and senior) had their names etched into the Golden Shovel.
