With a desperateswipe of his stick and exquisite timing, Flames defenseman Mark Giordano (46)reached from behind the Canucks' Richard Park and stopped a shot from crossingthe goal line last Saturday in Vancouver. The puck had slipped behind goalieMiikka Kiprusoff (inset) and slid across the goalmouth.

While star centerCrystal Langhorne (1) was in the middle of the Terrapins' celebration aftertheir 78--75 overtime defeat of Duke in the NCAA finals on April 4 (page 24),the Blue Devils' Abby Waner was in anguish. With the final snip of the scissorsin Boston, Maryland coach Brenda Frese (inset) netted a trophy.
