Up & Down

The Open's over, but Phil may not be alone in feeling like an idiot

GeoffOgilvy
The 29-year-old became only the second Aussie to win the Open and the first towin a major since Steve Elkington took the 1995 PGA Championship.

Internationals
The last three Open winners have been from South Africa, New Zealand andAustralia, and the leader board was rife with foreign players, including anumber of likely European Ryder Cuppers.

Black
Of the 436 rounds played at Winged Foot last week, 424 were at par or higher, and the field averaged a whopping 74.99 strokes a round, almost five shots overpar.

Comebacks
Five years after his last win Steve Stricker tied for sixth. Five years afterhis British Open win David Duval (left) got 16th.

Winged Foot
More than 30 years after the original massacre, the course once again proved arugged and unyielding test, equaling the highest total score for a winner (285)since 1992.

FIFA (ABC)
The U.S. World Cup game, featuring Landon Donovan (right), trounced the Open, scoring a 5.2 in the Nielsen ratings.

Ryuji Imada
Is Imada, of Japan, the best player you've never heard of or just an Openspecialist? He finished 15th at Winged Foot and 12th last year.

JohnnyMiller
When he let slip that he'd love to call the Masters one day, it wasn't justtalk. He was apparently offered and is considering taking the top chair atCBS.

Tiger Woods
The 30-year-old missed a cut in a major for the first time in 38 starts as aprofessional and admitted afterward that he probably wasn't ready to play.

Americans
Phil Mickelson and Jim Furyk (left) blew chances to win--a scary outcome sinceno other probable U.S. Ryder Cup players finished in the top 15.

Red
The two lowest rounds were a pair of 68s shot by Duval and ArronOberholser.

Upstarts
Rookie hotshots J.B. Holmes and Camilo Villegas (right) made the cut, butHolmes wound up at 17 over, while Villegas limped in at plus 22.

TieredRough
Graduated levels of rough sounded like a good idea, but it didn't have muchpractical effect: The ball was dead in either of the outer levels.

USGA (NBC)
A Tigerless bogeyfest, the third round of the U.S. Open ratings fell to 3.2,down 27% from last year.

SergioGarcía
García missed the cut, at 16 over, but he still looked pretty happy in thatendless run of beer ads.

LannyWadkins
Wadkins may have dodged the Miller bullet, but his act is already wearing thinand CBS will add three events to its schedule in 2007. Somewhere Nick Faldo'sagent is drooling.
