Mel, a sophomorerighthander at Whiting High, struck out 11 and pitched a one-hitter to give theOilers the Class 1A championship and their first state softball title. (Theteam was Indiana's first undefeated softball champion.) She led the state inwins with a 32-0 record and had an 0.42 ERA.

EAST ORANGE, N.J.> Track and Field

Jackson, a juniorat Lincoln University, won the 100-meter dash, finished third in the 200 metersand helped the Lions to a second-place finish in the 4√ó100-meter relays at theNCAA Division III championships in Lisles, Ill. She was named the meet's mostoutstanding female track athlete.

Nolan Belcher

EVANS, GA. >Baseball

Nolan, a juniorsouthpaw at Greenbrier High, was named The Augusta Chronicle's All-AreaBaseball player of the year after helping the Wolfpack win the Class AAAA statechampionship. He was 15-0 this season with an 0.79 ERA, striking out 155batters and allowing two hits or fewer in 13 starts. He is now 25-0 for hiscareer.

FREMONT, CALIF.> Water Skiing

Storm, a seniorat Irvington High, won his second consecutive junior overall title at the sixthannual Junior U.S. Open Water Ski Championships at Sunset Lakes in Okahumpka,Fla. A week earlier he took the overall title at the Junior Masters tournamentin Pine Mountain, Ga.

ROCKY POINT, N.Y.> Lacrosse

Fabian, a seniorattack at Long Island University/C.W. Post, was named the IntercollegiateWomen's Lacrosse Coaches Association Division II attacker of the year. She ledthe nation in points (6.28) and assists (3.94) per game and set a Division IIsingle-season record with 71 assists.

Anton Nikolov

ASHLAND, MASS.> Tennis

Anton, a juniorat Ashland High, won all eight matches in straight sets to win theMassachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association championship in boys'singles. He was 22-1 this season (37-2 for his career) and was named Tri-ValleyLeague most valuable player for a second time.
