Leading Off

Underbelly
After her mount broke down and she was forced to jump off, Chantal Sutherland rolled into a ball to protect herself from Unleash the Cat (7) in the seventh race at the Meadowlands on Oct. 18. That helped jockey Thomas Turner avoid Sutherland, who peered down the track after the field was safely past (inset).

Route 62
Matt Bryant of the Buccaneers booted a 62-yard field goal as time expired on Sunday, lifting Tampa Bay to a 23--21 home victory over the Eagles. The kick was the third longest in NFL history and bettered by 12 yards the career high of Bryant (inset), who had tried only two field goals of 50 yards or more in five seasons.

Classic View
With 42,479 in Comerica Park for Game 1 of the first World Series in Detroit since 1984, Tigers starter Justin Verlander struck out centerfielder Jim Edmonds to begin the second inning. But the next batter, Scott Rolen, homered, and the Cardinals were on their way to a 7--2 win. The Tigers and third baseman Brandon Inge (inset) scrambled to even the series with a 3--1 victory on Sunday (page 42).
