Stiffed Upper Lip
Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson blasted through a tackle by Rams safety Oshiomogho Atogwe en route to a 38-yard touchdown, the first of his three scores in San Diego's 38--24 home win on Sunday. While Tomlinson rushed for 183 yards on 25 carries, quarterback Philip Rivers (inset) connected on 15 of 23 passes for 206 yards.
Bull Tilt
Heath Shrimp of Australia was bent out of shape during a rough ride on Super Cool at the Professional Bull Riders World Finals last Friday in Las Vegas. Guilherme Marchi (inset) from Brazil was the points leader in the PBR season standings at week's end.
Arnold (Red) Auerbach 1917--2006
He didn't have to wave his rolled-up program from the bench or smoke his victory cigar during another Celtics victory to cut an intimidating (or abrasive) figure at Boston Garden in 1956--57. That season Auerbach coached Boston to the first of its 11 NBA championships in 13 years; his larcenous personnel moves as general manager laid the groundwork for five more titles. Although he lived in Washington, D.C., throughout his career, he remained an executive for the team even at 75 (inset). Auerbach died of a heart attack, at 89, last Saturday (page 44).
