EIGHT IS ENOUGH
Junior wide receiver Marquan Jones (right) of Blythewood (S.C.) High tied a national record last Friday when he caught eight touchdown passes in an 84--41 win over Blue Ridge. He caught 17 passes overall for 376 yards. Ervin Johnson of Los Angeles Cathedral--no relation to Earvin Johnson of L.A.--also caught eight TD passes in a game in 1998.
THE 4,000 CLUB
Kennedy Catholic (Hermitage, Pa.) seniors Ross Gargano and Lee Plotts are believed to be the first high school teammates in the state to surpass 4,000 career rushing yards. Both moved past that milestone in a 41--0 win over Farrell on Friday. Gargano, a quarterback, had 12 carries for 120 yards and a touchdown and now has 4,111 yards; Plotts, a running back, ran 24 times for 175 yards, bringing his total to 4,168 yards.
Independence High (Thompson Station, Tenn.) sophomore Kathy Kroeger (below) ran 16:59.45 last Saturday to become the first girl in Tennessee history to break 17 minutes on a 5K cross-country course. She won the Class AAA state title for the second straight year, finishing more than a minute ahead of her nearest competitor.
For the third straight year Buddy Turner, a senior at Horizon High (Scottsdale, Ariz.), won state titles in two events: this year, the 50 and 500 freestyle. In the 50 he came within .14 second of the 20.30 state record set 12 years ago by Olympic gold medalist Gary Hall Jr., who swam at Phoenix's Brophy High.
