THE LIST
TOTALLY 3DICULOUS
Players at Huntington Beach (Calif.) Marina wear T-shirts that say 3DICULOUS, a slogan chosen by the coaching staff for the team's unorthodox style, which relies on quick substitutions, forced turnovers and rapid-fire three-pointers. The strategy suits the team's roster of jump shooters, says coach Roger Holmes. Marina (13--6), which has made a state-record 28 three-pointers twice this season, broke the state season record for three-pointers during its 72--67 win over Anaheim's Esperanza on Jan. 10. Marina's total stands at 315; the national record is 382.
SPEAKING OF THREES
Armon Johnson (right) of Hug High (Reno) hit a buzzer-beater from behind the arc last week that was big for two reasons: The bucket gave his 12--3 Hawks a 76--75 win over Reno, and it capped a 33-point performance that earned him the state record for career points with 2,155. Johnson, a 6'3" senior guard, will attend Nevada.
ADU TWO
Last Friday, Abdusalam Ibrahim, 15, became the second-youngest player, after Freddy Adu, to be drafted into Major League Soccer, going to FC Dallas with the 14th pick. The 6'1", 165-pound midfielder (left), a native of Ethiopia who emigrated at age 11, is known for his agility and selflessness. He had played for Richfield (Minn.) before moving to Bradenton, Fla., in January 2006 to train with the U.S. under-17 team.
TITANIC CLASH
Illinois is home to two of the nation's top-ranked girls' basketball teams, but they had never played each other until Saturday, when No. 9 Bolingbrook defeated previously unbeaten No. 2 Fenwick 54--48. Bolingbrook (16--1) was led by senior forward Mauvolyene Adams, who had 15 points.
