Checkered Pass
A last-second surge of horsepower put Kevin Harvick's number 29 Chevy just ahead of Mark Martin's racer and into Victory Lane as the winner of the Daytona 500 (page 46) on Sunday at Daytona International Speedway. Harvick (inset) was toasted by his red-and-yellow-clad crew in a blizzard of confetti.

Ghana won the five-nation tournament, and its forward Collins Gyemfi (above, shirtless) was the event's high scorer with 10 goals.

Butler Didn't Do It
A 22-game home winning streak ended for Butler last Saturday when Jamaal Tatum (with the ball) and Southern Illinois beat the Bulldogs 68--64 at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The Salukis, whose physical defense throttled Butler, moved up three spots to No. 13 in the AP Top 25 (page 73).
