My One and Only

Players stuck on the loneliest number

TOM GLAVINE
Mets Pitcher
ONE CAREER STEAL: May 13, 1991

IN 21 SEASONS, Glavine has had 1,256 at bats and reached base 328 times. And in his fourth full season with Atlanta, against pitcher Shawn Boskie and catcher Damon Berryhill of the Cubs, he stole a base. "Boskie wasn't paying attention, and I kept looking at the third base coach," says Glavine, who was at second after an RBI double. "It was a no-lose situation. If I got thrown out, no big deal—you've got the leadoff hitter coming up next inning.... I remember thinking, If I'm ever going to get one, now's the time." The now 41-year-old made it safely and also had three sacrifice bunts and got a complete-game win that day. "All I needed was to sell some popcorn and I would have done it all," he says, adding, "I feel I'm going to get another [stolen base] this year. Pitchers have been forewarned."

TOBY HALL
White Sox Catcher
ONE CAREER TRIPLE: July 27, 2002

THE SEVEN-YEAR veteran admits he's not fleet of foot, which is why he was surprised to find himself standing on third and breathing hard after hitting a ball down the leftfield line against the Yankees while with Tampa Bay. "All that was going through my mind was, I don't know how these guys do it, because that's a long way. I was dead tired," Hall says. "It clanked off the bullpen bench in Tropicana Field and ricocheted into centerfield. It was supposed to be a double but the leftfielder chased after it, and when it hit the bench it went into no-man's-land. I was coasting into second, saw it and said, 'Wow, that means I have to go to third.'" Hall refused his teammates' offer of a souvenir—"They wanted to give me the base," he says—but he's grateful for the three-bagger. "You want at least a one on the back of your baseball card under every category."
