Leading Off

Street Scene
The fans in the Churchill Downs grandstands roared as Street Sense (second from right) caught Hard Spun in the homestretch of the Kentucky Derby last Saturday. Aboard the 9--2 favorite, Calvin Borel (inset) celebrated his first Triple Crown victory (page 42).

Making Believers
Warriors point guard Baron Davis saved the ball and then made like Joe Montana last Thursday, firing a pass in a 111--86 victory over the Mavericks. After helping Golden State to a historic first-round upset of top-seeded Dallas (page 40), Davis scored a team-high 24 points on Monday night in Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals, but the Warriors lost to the Jazz 116--112.

Weight Watchers
Sumo wrestlers worked out last Saturday in Tokyo before the Yokozuna Deliberation Council, which recommends the competitors who deserve the sport's highest rank. The workouts, which had been closed to the public until recent years, drew 8,450 fans.
