Russell, a sophomore at Texas, was named Big 12 player of the year. The rightfielder led the nation in home runs (28) and ranked seventh in slugging (.807). He batted .336 with 71 RBIs and was a finalist for the Dick Howser Trophy, given to the top player in Division I.

Mann-King, a senior captain at Western Washington, helped the Division II Vikings become the first school in any division to win three straight national rowing championships. The three-time All-America sat in the seven seat in the varsity eight shell in all three seasons.

Spencer, a recent graduate of Bryant High, is the nation's best high school pole vaulter. He had the top three outdoor vaults this year, including a personal best of 17' 9", the fourth-highest high school vault of all time. He will attend the University of Arkansas.

WINNEBAGO, ILL. > Bowling
Ellen, a recent graduate of Winnebago High, is a repeat United States Bowling Congress All-America and a repeat state champion. The Vanderbilt-bound Indian won the inaugural Denny's high school championship in Grand Rapids, Mich., defeating Kayla Stamm of Shillington, Pa., 210 to 190.
COLUMBIA, MD. > Softball
Stephanie, a sophomore at Hammond High, pitched a perfect game, striking out 19 of 21 batters, and drove in three of the Golden Bears' runs in their 4--0 Maryland state final victory. She had a state-record 426 strikeouts this year, was 23--1 and had an ERA of 0.20 while batting .649.
CORAL SPRINGS, FLA. > Track and Field
Dix, a junior at Florida State, won national titles in the 100 and 200 meters and the 4 √ó 100-meter relay, contributing 30 of the 54 points the Seminoles earned while winning their second straight NCAA championship. At a regional meet in May, he set a collegiate record in the 200 with a time of 19.69 seconds.
