Leading Off

High Hard One
Padres 6' 10" righthander Chris Young took a swing at Cubs first baseman Derrek Lee during a bench-clearing skirmish in the fourth inning of last Saturday's game at Wrigley Field. It all started after a Young pitch hit Lee on the left arm; Lee had words with the pitcher as he went to first, then threw the first punch. On Monday they were suspended for five games each.

Gliding in The Gloaming
As the sun set in Oslo, Norway, last Friday, Phillips Idowu of Great Britain won the triple jump with a leap of 59' 11" at the IAAF Golden League Bislett Games. Aarik Wilson of the U.S. was third with a jump of 56' 7 1/2".

Birds of Pay
In Kabul, bettors engage in what is a widespread (if underground) obsession among many Afghan men: Bodahna bird fighting. The small quail peck at each other (inset) until one of the combatants repeatedly runs away. The equivalent of thousands of dollars can change hands.
