Mitch Canham tagged out North Carolina shortstop Josh Horton in the first inning at Omaha on Sunday, cutting off a rally and helping Oregon State to a 9--3 victory and the College World Series title (inset). The Beavers defeated the Tar Heels in the finals for the second straight year, becoming the first repeat champion since LSU in 1996 and '97. In 45 CWS innings they trailed only once.
Coming to a Head
U.S. defender Oguchi Onyewu outjumped Mexico's Jose Jonny Magallon to clear a corner kick in the Gold Cup final at Chicago's Soldier Field on Sunday. The U.S. won 2--1 (page 58) behind a team-record-tying 34th career goal from Landon Donovan (inset).
Sails Pitch
Off Valencia, Spain, on Sunday, Swiss defender Alinghi (SUI 100) and challenger Emirates Team New Zealand maneuvered before the start of the second match race of the 32nd America's Cup. Alinghi skipper Brad Butterworth (inset, left) lost the race to Dean Barker (inset, right), which squared the best-of-nine series at 1-all.
