Week Ahead

What to watch and watch for

THURSDAY 7/19
British Open
Known as Carnasty for its narrow fairways and thick rough, Scotland's Carnoustie Golf Club was the setting, in 1999, for one of golf's most stunning meltdowns. The memory of Jean Van de Velde's coughing up a three-stroke lead on the final hole of the Open Championship with a series of disastrously aggressive plays will serve as a cautionary tale for all who enter this year's Open.
Thursday-Sunday, TNT 7 a.m.; Saturday, ABC 9 a.m.; Sunday, ABC 8 a.m.

SATURDAY 7/21
Bernard Hopkins vs. Winky Wright
Former undisputed middleweight champion Hopkins (far right), now 42, tries to prove that age ain't nothin' but a number as he takes on the 35-year-old Wright (51-3-1, 25 KOs), a former junior middleweight champion. Hopkins (47-4-1, 32 KOs) and Wright meet for the first time, with Hopkins's Ring magazine light heavyweight belt at stake.
PPV 9 p.m.

AVP Long Beach Open: Women's Final
The Open, the first AVP women's event held in Long Beach, Calif., will be a homecoming of sorts for Misty May-Treanor (above), who for years has dominated the tour with partner Kerri Walsh. At Long Beach State in 1998, May-Treanor led the 49ers to the NCAA title and was named the NCAA's female athlete of the year.
NBC 4:30 p.m.

SUNDAY 7/22
Formula One: Grand Prix of Europe
In his remarkable rookie season Lewis Hamilton has won twice and stood at the podium in each of the nine races in which he's competed. The 22-year-old Brit takes a 12-point lead into Nürburgring, Germany.
SPEED, 7:30 a.m.

TUESDAY 7/24
Padres vs. Rockies
Chris Young and Jake Peavy, owners of the two lowest ERAs in the majors (1.97 and 2.19, respectively) have the Padres in the hunt for the NL West title. But can righthanders Peavy (left) and Young—both due to pitch in this series against their division rival—silence the hot bat of Colorado outfielder Matt Holliday?

SI PICK OF THE WEEK

SATURDAY 7/21
Chelsea FC at Los Angeles Galaxy
Let the experiment begin. David Beckham, after signing a five-year, $32.5 million contract in January, is expected to debut on his new home turf in this friendly match. The role of party spoiler will be played by Chelsea, the team that has won two of the last three English Premier League titles. While Beckham's skills at bending balls inspired a movie title, Chelsea midfielder Claude Makelele has had his name memorialized in soccer parlance; his defensive play is so skillful that all other holding midfielders are now said to be playing "the Makelele role."
