"The objective was just for him to be on the pitch and give thepeople the dessert they were looking for," Chelsea coach Jose Mourinhosaid. It worked. A sellout crowd of 27,000 exploded when Beckham took his placein midfield. Beckham, who absorbed a nasty hit from Chelsea's Steve Sidwell,finished the game—which Chelsea won 1-0—without aggravating the injury that haskept him out of practice. "I'm not fit," the 32-year-old said. "Ihaven't trained since I got here. But it's nice to be out there."

By Brazilian swimmer Thiago Pereira, Mark Spitz's 40-year-old record for themost gold medals won at one Pan Am Games. Swimming in front of his home fans inRio, the 21-year-old won six golds, a silver and a bronze and set four Gamesrecords. In 1967 Spitz, then 17, won five golds in Winnipeg. (Five years laterhe won seven gold medals at the Olympics.) Pereira (above) said he hoped theattention his exploits generated would lead to more opportunities for swimmersin his homeland. "I hope there's an increase in support, especially in thedeveloping categories of younger swimmers, where it's needed the most," hesaid. "Some kids just stop when they're halfway there, at 15."

By Bernard Hopkins, the seven-year unbeaten streak of Winky Wright. Hopkins(below, left) won a unanimous decision in their light heavyweight bout lastSaturday. Most observers expected a boring fight between the two cautious,defensive boxers, but there was plenty of action—beginning at Friday'sweigh-in. After some trash-talking, Hopkins, 42, shoved Wright, 35, in theface, and their entourages exchanged punches. (Nevada officials are withholding10% of Hopkins's $3 million purse pending a hearing.) Wright (51-4-1) came outthe more aggressive fighter, but he slowed a bit after an accidental head buttopened a gash over his left eye. "It was a tough fight, a very closefight," Hopkins (48-4-1) said. "Winky is tough, and he kept coming. Heknows that I respect him a lot. I had no ill intent. It was all good for bothgentlemen, and boxing is back."

Arrested
After getting into a fight with police officers, Marlins pitcher Scott Olsen.Officers in Aventura, Fla., tried to pull Olsen over for speeding, but Olsendrove to his house, sat down in a plastic chair in his yard and refused to getup. When officers tried to arrest the 6'5", 215-pound 23-year-old, heallegedly kicked at them. He was then shot in the leg with a stun gun. Olsenwas charged with DUI, resisting an officer with violence and fleeing andeluding a police officer. Earlier last week Olsen was suspended for two gamesby the Marlins after he got into a dugout confrontation with teammate SergioMitre. Olsen was released on bail and was scheduled to pitch on Wednesday.

His intention to say arrivederci to basketball in the U.S., Knicks guardStephon Marbury. The 30-year-old said he will play in Italy when his contractexpires in two years. Marbury, who will make $42 million over the final twoseasons of his current contract, recently visited Italy with his wife. "I'mnot just thinking of doing it, I'm going to do it," Marbury told the NewYork Post. "My wife loved it there. It's like a Beckham thing."

By Cuba, its 10th straight Pan Am Games baseball gold medal, with a 3-1 victoryover the U.S. Using a team of college players, the U.S. went 4-0 to reach thefinals in Rio, but they were unable to figure out Cuba's 36-year-old AdielPalma, who struck out nine and allowed just four hits in last Saturday's goldmedal game.

Detained
Briefly by Toronto police, all 21 members of Chile's under-20 soccer team.After Chile lost to Argentina in a hotly contested match at the U-20 World Cup,Chilean players and police clashed outside the stadium. The players claimedthey were trying to greet their fans; the police said the players were damagingtheir bus and refused to stop. Police used Tasers and pepper spray to subduethe players, several of whom were bruised and bloodied. No one was arrested,but FIFA has launched an investigation. "The incident is especially seriousbecause, in our opinion, the Chilean delegation suffered unjustifiedaggression," Chile's president, Michelle Bachelet, said.

Died
After he was struck by a line drive during a game, Tulsa Drillers coach MikeCoolbaugh (left). The 35-year-old former major leaguer was coaching first baseon Sunday night when a foul ball hit him in the head. Paramedics performed CPRon the field, but Coolbaugh died en route to the hospital. Coolbaugh played 44games in two seasons for the Brewers and the Cardinals. He joined the staff ofthe Drillers, the Double A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies, earlier thismonth.
