Week Ahead
THURSDAY 10/11
NLCS Game 1
Hitting in the postseason? There's nothing to it as far as Diamondbacks rookie Chris Young (right) is concerned. The 24-year-old centerfielder hit two home runs in Arizona's Division Series sweep of the Cubs, including a leadoff shot that effectively ended Game 3 before Wrigley Field's Bleacher Bums had finished their first beers. Young's Diamondbacks host the first two games of the NLCS against the Rockies (page 38), who have lost once in their last 18 games. That loss was handed to them by Arizona.
TBS 8 p.m.
FRIDAY 10/12
In theaters: The Final Season Two veterans of inspirational sports movies—director David M. Evans (The Sandlot) and Rudy himself, actor Sean Astin—team up in the story of an Iowa high school baseball team that suits up for one last, magical season before it's merged with a neighboring school. Astin plays the team's coach in a film based on a true story.
SATURDAY 10/13
No. 4 Boston College at Notre Dame
Eagles quarterback Matt Ryan (right), who's averaging 309.5 passing yards a game, has the 6--0 Eagles off to their best start and highest AP poll ranking since they went 6--0 in 1984. Meanwhile the Fighting Irish, who have lost four straight to BC since 2001, are 1--5 for the first time since 1960.
NBC 3:30 p.m.
Senators at Rangers
Starting goaltender Ray Emery is sidelined with a left-wrist injury—he's expected to be back on the ice next week—but Ottawa is still set in net. Backup Martin Gerber, 33, allowed only five goals in the Senators' first three games, all wins. The Rangers, who are expected to battle Ottawa for the top of the Eastern Conference, were 1--1 through Sunday.
MSG 7 p.m.
SUNDAY 10/14
Patriots at Cowboys
On one hand Dallas has one of the league's top offenses, averaging well over 400 yards a game. On the other hand undefeated New England is coming to town, fresh off a 34--17 spanking of the Browns, the fifth straight game in which the Patriots have scored at least 34 points. New England QB Tom Brady has a league-leading 16 TD passes.
CBS 4:15 p.m.
SI PICK OF THE WEEK
THURSDAY 10/11
Samsung World Championship
Only 20 LPGA players are invited to the smallest women's golf event of the season. Bids go to money-list leaders, major-championship winners and the defending Samsung champ. Lorena Ochoa (above) won the Samsung last year and took this year's Women's British Open. At Bighorn Golf Club in Palm Desert, Calif., the world's No. 1 player takes on a field that includes Se Ri Pak (No. 6 in the world rankings), Morgan Pressel (No. 9) and Michelle Wie, a sponsor's exemption playing her first event since enrolling at Stanford.
