Big Play

WHO K.J. Choi

WHAT Three-foot birdie putt

WHERE 551-yard par-5 18th hole at Waialae Country Club

WHEN Final round of the Sony Open

WHY

On the course Choi appears emotionless, but looks are deceiving. He uses a superfat putter grip because he's nervous inside, which caused him to putt poorly for many years. In 2005 Choi saw the fat grip on an infomercial and paid $49 for one. He didn't care when people joked about the grip because it steadied or quieted his hands, and the first time he put it into play, at the AT&T National last July, he won.

JOHN'S TIP

Forward Press for Quiet Hands

To quiet your hands with the putter, try using a forward press. Start with a normal set-up, then lean the shaft forward until the butt end touches the inside of your left forearm. Maintain that lean during the stroke, and you'll feel how the arms and upper body move the putter while the hands go along for the ride--quietly. It's a good drill, and you can even play that way.

"Davis Love III still has a lot of desire and a ton of game, and now that he's healthy, I expect him to contend for a major this year."
