Baltimore Bullets
Morgan Stateisn't the only Baltimore college team showing the nation that there is morethan one basketball program in Maryland. Take the University of Maryland,Baltimore County (UMBC). Thanks to a trio of transfers—senior guard Ray Barbosa(left), senior forward Cavell Johnson, and junior forward Darryl Proctor—theRetrievers snapped a skid of five years without a winning record by finishing21--8 and atop the America East Conference. If UMBC beats Hartford on Saturdayin the conference tournament final, it will make its first trip to the BigDance in 22 years as a Division 1 program. Also doing Crabtown proud wasLoyola, four years removed from a 1--27 record. Now in their fourth seasonunder former Maryland assistant Jimmy Patsos, the Greyhounds went 18--13 andreached the semifinals of the MAAC tournament.
