Out of Leftfield
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of their move from Brooklyn to Los Angeles, the Dodgers (page 40) played an exhibition game last Saturday at the Coliseum, their home the first four seasons they were in L.A. For this game the leftfield foul line extended only 201 feet (though batters had to clear a 60-foot-high screen for a home run), which made a third outfielder unnecessary. (He's playing behind second base.) The Red Sox won 7--4 before a crowd of 115,300, the largest ever to watch a baseball game.

All Heart
Dustin Carter, a 103-pounder from Hillsboro (Ohio) High, flipped Carlin Dubay of Caribou, Maine, during their first-round match last Friday at the National High School Coaches Association Senior Nationals in Virginia Beach. Carter (inset), who at age five had to have each limb amputated after suffering a blood infection, lost 1--0. During the season he had gone 41--2 and reached the state championships.

Orange Rush
Tennessee forward Candace Parker led a fast break that was too quick for Notre Dame during a Sweet 16 matchup in the NCAA women's tournament (page 39) on Sunday in Oklahoma City. Scoring a game-high 34 points, Parker led the Lady Vols to a 74--64 victory and a showdown with Texas A&M on Tuesday for a berth in the Final Four.
