Legends by the Numbers
This week SI.com names the best baseball player for every uniform number. Babe Ruth (3), Joe DiMaggio (5), Mickey Mantle (7) and Ted Williams (9) are not surprises, but who's the pick for 8: Yogi Berra or Cal Ripken Jr.? Plus the latest shots from the NBA and NHL playoffs, the week in review and a special Mother's Day gallery of athletes and their moms.

FROM SPORTS ILLUSTRATED MAY 15, 1978

SI.com regularly digs into the archives and presents a classic SPORTS ILLUSTRATED story. This week it's William Leggett's 1978 piece on Affirmed, who won the Kentucky Derby and remains the last horse to take the Triple Crown.

AFFIRMED won the Kentucky Derby by 1 1/2 lengths over Alydar, in a race difficult to assess. For a good while, at least until the Preakness is run at Pimlico, racing fans are going to argue over what happened at Churchill Downs. Four days before the race, Louis Wolfson, who owns Affirmed, had stood on the Churchill Downs backstretch and made a prediction: "If Affirmed is in front at the top of the stretch," Wolfson said, "you can put your binoculars down because Alydar won't catch him."
