SI.com regularly digs into the archives for a classic SPORTS ILLUSTRATED story. This week it's Phil Taylor's 1994 piece on the NBA conference finals, which featured four feisty guards: Utah's John Stockton, Indiana's Reggie Miller, New York's John Starks and Houston's Vernon Maxwell.

ONCE conventional wisdom held that a poised, clearheaded backcourt was a key to winning a championship. But that was before the playoffs turned into snarling, mean-spirited tournaments in which the body slam is as much a part of the action as the slam dunk. It seems now that heat is preferable to cool, that a guard who can ignite his team, even if he loses control from time to time, is as important as one who can calm his club down.
