Leading Off
Every Body Missed
Celtics guard Rajan Rondo (9) rode the back of teammate James Posey, who locked onto Pistons forward Rasheed Wallace, but none of them got the ball in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals last Thursday. Detroit did get the victory, 103--97, at TD Banknorth Garden before Boston and Kevin Garnett (inset) turned the tables in Game 3, winning 94--80 on the road for a 2--1 series lead.
Good As Gold
Manchester United basked in a glittering celebration after winning the world's most prestigious club tournament, the UEFA Champions League, on penalty kicks in Moscow on May 21. After regulation and overtime ended 1--1, United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar (inset) clinched a 6--5 shootout victory over Chelsea by saving Nicolas Anelka's shot.
Cutthroat
Syracuse midfielder Dan Hardy got a stick in the gullet from Eric Zerrlaut of Johns Hopkins during the men's NCAA lacrosse championship game in Foxborough, Mass., on Monday. Hardy scored three goals to lead the Orange to a 13--10 victory and a record 10th title before 48,970 at Gillette Stadium, the largest crowd ever to witness an NCAA outdoor championship. The night before, in Towson, Md., the Northwestern women (inset) won their fourth national title in a row, defeating Penn 10--6.
