Leading Off

Cracker Barrel
No wonder Braves third baseman Chipper Jones was hitting .405 at week's end: Despite splitting his bat on a pitch by the Brewers' Seth McClung, he dumped a first-inning single into leftfield last Thursday in Milwaukee. Jones went 2 for 4 in Atlanta's 8--1 victory.

For the Record
Usain Bolt of Jamaica (fourth from right) broke the world 100-meter-dash mark with a time of 9.72 last Saturday in the final event of the Reebok Grand Prix on Randall's Island in New York City. The 21-year-old Bolt (inset) shaved .02 of a second off the record held by countryman Asafa Powell and beat runner-up Tyson Gay of the U.S. (fifth from right) by .13 of a second (page 64).

Game of Survival
Children at a camp for earthquake refugees in the Chinese county of Wenchuan, in Sichuan province, enjoyed a brief respite from their tragic circumstances by improvising a game of table tennis last week. The death toll from the May 12 quake stood at more than 68,000, with almost 20,000 still missing.
