The Celtics andthe Lakers have squared off 10 times in the NBA Finals. In the Feb. 25,1963issue of SPORTS ILLUSTRATED, writer William Leggett depicted the tensionbetween a veteran Boston team and frisky L.A.
THE Lakers comefrom places like Brooklyn, Gary, Ind., and Cabin Creek, W.Va., but they haveall developed a distinctive, exuberant flair, the kind of thing Bostonians bynature don't like. Elgin Baylor, the Lakers' star, looked out on the court andsaw three Celtics—Sam Jones, Clyde Lovellette and Dan Swartz—starting topractice. Baylor unbuttoned his magnificent raglan overcoat with the redlining, took a penny from his pocket and tossed it at the Celtics—the gesturethat bored customers once used to drive bad vaudeville acts off the stage.Baylor then turned and walked to his dressing room with a confident smile onhis face.
