Week Ahead

What to watch and watch for

FRIDAY 6/20
NHL Draft
Tampa Bay is all but certain to take 18-year-old center Steve Stamkos (right) of the Ontario Hockey League's Sarnia Sting with the top pick. The Lightning tipped its hand in April, when, just days after winning the draft lottery, the team launched a "Seen Stamkos?" website. After Stamkos goes, there will likely be a run on blueliners, including Canada's Drew Doughty, who was named top defenseman at the World Juniors.

In Theaters: The Love Guru
Mike Myers's latest strange-speaking character is Pitka, a spiritualist who is hired to get a Toronto Maple Leafs player (Romary Malco) back with his wife, who has left him for a French Canadian goalie played by Justin Timberlake. If that's not enough of a stretch, Verne Troyer plays the Leafs' coach.

SATURDAY 6/21
Women's Gymnastics, U.S. Olympic Trials
The last week has been tough for 16-year-old Shawn Johnson (below), who won the all-around at the U.S. Championships last month. She was forced to abandon the gym owned by her coach, Liang Chow, after floodwaters ruined the facility in West Des Moines, Iowa. The pair relocated to Ames, and Johnson hopes to put a smile back on Chow's face by locking up a spot in Beijing.

SUNDAY 6/22
Iowa Corn Indy 250
At 7/8 of a mile, Iowa Speedway is the second-shortest course on the IndyCar circuit—and that means cramped quarters. Last year, in the first race at the track, accidents collected nearly half of the 19-car field. A wreck is probably the only thing that's going to slow down Scott Dixon; the Indy 500 winner has finished in the top three in six of seven races.
ABC 1:30 p.m.

MONDAY 6/23
Wimbledon
Think an early third-round upset loss at Roland Garros will deter defending champion Venus Williams? Not likely. The last three times she has been eliminated from the French Open before the quarterfinals, Williams has bounced back to win Wimbledon.

SI PICK OF THE WEEK

SUNDAY 6/22
White Sox at Cubs
For the first time since MLB introduced interleague play in 1997, the Windy City showdown will feature two first-place teams. The Sox are thriving thanks to leftfielder Carlos Quentin (left), an off-season pickup from the Diamondbacks who has 54 RBIs—just nine short of his total from his first two seasons. The Cubbies, who have the NL's best offense and the majors' best record, have gotten a boost from centerfielder Jim Edmonds (right). Released by the Padres in May, he has hit .297 with 13 RBIs in 21 games since joining the Cubs.
