Week Ahead

What to watch and watch for

THURSDAY 6/26
U.S. Women's Open
The Annika Sorenstam farewell tour continues at Interlachen in Edina, Minn., where the 37-year-old Swede will play this major tournament for the final time. Sorenstam, who is retiring after the season, has won three Opens—the last in 2006.
Thursday ESPN noon; Friday ESPN 3 p.m.; Saturday-Sunday NBC 3 p.m.

NBA Draft
Questions abound: Will Heat boss Pat Riley pass over Michael Beasley and take O.J. Mayo with the second pick? How many times will the word upside be used on the broadcast? And, most pressingly, who will follow in the footsteps of last year's winner, Chicago's Joakim Noah (right, with David Stern), and take home the coveted Jalen Rose Gaudiest Suit Award?
ESPN 7:30 p.m.

SATURDAY 6/28
U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials
The event to watch is the men's 400 meters, in which 2004 gold medalist Jeremy Wariner (left) will try to avenge a loss to LaShawn Merritt earlier this month. Wariner's defeat in Berlin—Merritt beat him by .04 of a second—was his first since April 2005.
USA midnight

Yankees at Mets
Queens Zoo, anyone? The day after the Mets fired manager Willie Randolph—capping an arduous will-they-or-won't-they saga—his successor, Jerry Manuel, got into a tiff with shortstop José Reyes, who tossed his helmet and stormed into the clubhouse. Perhaps the Mets will, like the 1978 Yankees, thrive on disharmony; at week's end they had won three of five since Manuel took over.
Fox 3:30 p.m.

SUNDAY 6/29
Galaxy at D.C. United
L.A.'s 2007 pickups are paying dividends—and not just David Beckham. Forward Edson Buddle (right), who joined the Galaxy in a trade with Toronto FC, is starting to play like the guy he was named after, Edson Arantes do Nascimento (better known as Pelé). Buddle, 27, scored his second hat trick of the season on June 14, and his eight goals put him behind only teammate Landon Donovan, who has nine, in the race for the MLS Golden Boot. (The Euro 2008 final follows at 2:30 p.m.)
ABC noon

SI PICK OF THE WEEK

SUNDAY 6/29
U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials
Michael Phelps's quest to surpass Mark Spitz's record of seven gold medals at one Olympic Games begins with qualifying in Omaha, where Phelps—who won eight medals in Athens four years ago, including six gold—is entered in nine individual events. There's only one day during the meet, which runs from June 29 through July 6, on which Phelps won't swim in a final: Monday, June 30. He'll probably find something to fill his time, though, like eating cake or blowing out some candles: That's his 23rd birthday.
