LEADING OFF

Flat Tyrus

Bulls forward Tyrus Thomas went down hard after being fouled by 289-pound Celtics forward Glen Davis (left) last Saturday in overtime of the opening game of the NBA playoffs (page 58). As Thomas fell, Celtics guard Rajon Rondo unsuccessfully reached under him for the ball. The Bulls won 105--103 in Boston to seize home court advantage.

Ball And Chin

Brewers second baseman Rickie Weeks had squared off to bunt in the fourth inning of a game against the Reds on April 13 when he was hit in the face by a pitch from Edinson Volquez. Weeks suffered some swelling and soreness in his jaw—and Milwaukee suffered a 7--6 loss.

Gut Check

Spray flew and the puck sailed wide of the Red Wings' goal last Thursday when Detroit defenseman Brett Lebda (22) checked Blue Jackets right wing Jakub Voracek with a shoulder to the midsection during Game 1 in Detroit. In one of four intradivisional first-round matchups (page 34) the Red Wings took the opener 4--1 and held a 2--0 series lead at week's end.

Pit Stop

Challenger Brian Viloria of the U.S. delivered a shot to the axilla of IBF light flyweight champion Ulises Solis of Mexico during their title bout in Quezon City, the Philippines, on Sunday. Viloria relieved the champ of his belt with an 11th-round knockout, running his record to 25--2.
