F's for the A's

Adding Matt Holliday, Jason Giambi (below) and Orlando Cabrera was supposed to punch up an Oakland offense that was last in the AL in 2008 in runs, batting average and slugging percentage. A month in, though, the A's once again find themselves with the league's worst production; through Saturday they were scoring only 4.2 runs per game and had a slugging percentage of .330, fifty points worse than the 13th-place Mariners'. The three newcomers have been awful, combining for a .236 average, .309 OBP and .328 slugging with three homers. Only some fantastic work by the bullpen, which has the best ERA in the AL, has kept Oakland from disaster. The veteran imports have to hit, or G.M. Billy Beane will once again be looking to the future at the trade deadline.
