A severe thunderstorm tore apart the Cowboys' indoor practice facility in Irving, Texas, last Saturday while the team was holding its rookie minicamp. About 70 people were in the structure when its framework collapsed, injuring about a dozen people. As of Monday three Dallas staffers remained hospitalized, including scouting assistant Rich Behm, who had undergone surgery to stabilize a fracture of one of his thoracic vertebrae and was paralyzed from the waist down.
Mine That Bird (8) sped into a tight opening along the rail last Saturday on his way to winning the 135th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs (page 56). Jockey Calvin Borel, who brought the 50--1 long shot about 30 lengths back from dead last, won the Run for the Roses for the second time in three years.
England's Ricky Hatton lay flat on an ad for an energy drink after being knocked down by Manny Pacquiao of the Philippines in the second round of their junior welterweight title fight in Las Vegas last Saturday (page 32). Referee Kenny Bayless declared Pacquiao the victor by TKO after examining the supine Hatton.
Diamondbacks shortstop Augie Ojeda ran toward first base as Cubs catcher Geovany Soto rushed to field Ojeda's sacrifice bunt in the seventh inning of their game in Phoenix on April 29. Soto threw Ojeda out, but runners advanced to second and third. Arizona scored five runs in the inning and won 10--0.
