LEADING OFF
High Wire Act
Helio Castroneves climbed the fence at the Brickyard on Sunday to celebrate his third victory in the Indy 500 (page 50). Photographer Fred Vuich got the shot by mounting a camera and a flash on a pole, then raising them to the spot where Castroneves, who likes to scale the fence after wins, was expected to be.
Three Wishes
With 0.6 of a second left on the clock in Game 2 of the NBA Eastern Conference finals last Friday in Cleveland, the Cavaliers' LeBron James let fly a 24-footer that beat the Magic 96--95. It was the first game-winning three of James's career, and it prevented the Cavs from losing the first two games at home. Although the Cavs would lose Game 3 in Orlando 99--89, James's buzzer bomb was one of several fantastic finishes in the first week of conference play (page 40).
Wicket Move
Cornell midfielder John Glynn (in red) controlled a face-off against Syracuse midfielder Jake Moulton early in the NCAA Division I lacrosse championship game in Foxborough, Mass., on Monday. However, the Orange won four of the last five face-offs in regulation and earned their second straight national title by coming back from a 9--6 deficit to win 10--9 in overtime.
Spray Point
The Penguins' Sidney Crosby kicked up a cloud of ice as he slapped the puck past Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward's glove during Pittsburgh's 6--2 win in Game 3 of the NHL Eastern Conference finals in Raleigh last Saturday. Crosby added an assist to his goal as the Pens took a commanding 3--0 series lead. In the Western finals the Red Wings held a 3--1 edge over the Blackhawks at week's end (page 56).
