What smart fans should do this week

• HONOR
Pro Football Hall of Famers
QBs may take offense at the class of 2009—it's heavy on defense: Bruce Smith, alltime sacks leader; Derrick Thomas record holder for sacks in a game (seven); and Rod Woodson, most interceptions returned for TDs. Canton also welcomes Bob Hayes, Randall McDaniel and Bills owner Ralph Wilson on Saturday.

• WATCH
Dodgers at Giants
After three months apart, baseball's oldest rivals go at it again on Aug. 10 (MLB.TV). Naturally, the season series is tight, with L.A. up 5--4. (All time, S.F. has a 1,157--1,134 edge.) At week's end the Dodgers led the NL West and the Giants co-led the wild-card race. If they hold on, they could meet in the postseason for the first time.

• READ
Born to Run
Writer and jogger Christopher McDougall thought running injuries were unavoidable. Then he discovered Mexico's Tarahumara tribe, whose reclusive members effortlessly run ultramarathon distances barefoot. McDougall's sketch of the tribe and account of one of its races is a page-turner.

• WATCH
U.S. Women's Amateur
Noreen Mohler has visors older than some of her opponents in St. Louis this week. Mohler, 55, qualified for the Amateur for the first time since 1980. (Only seven of the other entrants were alive then.) Can she party like it's 1975, when she made the semis? The Golf Channel has live coverage Wednesday through Sunday.

• FOLLOW
Badminton worlds
No, Hyderabad is not a film by the Bollywood version of Judd Apatow. It's the Indian city that will host the badminton world championships, starting on Aug. 10. Think your backyard game has been strong this summer? See how the serious shuttlecock set plays at international badminton.org.

Inside the Grid

It grossed $80 million in the U.S., but Nicolas Cage's sci-fi thriller about a professor who deciphers coded messages that predict major disasters bombed here. "It just didn't make a whole lot of sense," Kendrick griped. And Paris agreed: "At the end you were left saying, 'What?'"
