LEADING OFF
Home Boy
Running on a wild pitch, Chula Vista's Nick Conlin slid safely across home plate to tie the score at 3--3 in the fourth inning of the Little League World Series championship game in Williamsport, Pa., on Sunday. Taoyuan Taiwan pitcher Lin Hung-yuan covered home but was unable to make a play. The boys from California went on to win the title 6--3 (page 26).
Flip Side
Tsagaanbaatar Khashbaatar of Mongolia (in blue) threw Fabrice Flamand of Belgium in the 145½-pound competition at the World Judo Championships in Rotterdam on Aug. 26. Khashbaatar won the match and went on to win the gold medal in his weight division.
Crane Clouds
Early-morning fog engulfed the Green Point soccer stadium on Aug. 25 in Cape Town, South Africa. Construction is expected to be completed in time for the 2010 World Cup, to be contested from June 11 through July 11 in 10 South African venues. Green Point will be the site of eight games, including one of the semifinals.
Edward M. Kennedy 1932--2009
The senior senator from Massachusetts, who died of brain cancer on Aug. 25, after 46 years in office, not only was an avid sailor (shown at the helm of his boat The Victura, in 1978) but also was a key supporter of the 1972 Title IX legislation, which helped increase women's participation in sports. In the years after the law was passed, Kennedy fought efforts to overturn or weaken Title IX.
