LEADING OFF
Bronx Cheer
The Yankee Stadium crowd rose in tribute as shortstop Derek Jeter (page 96) slapped a single to right off Orioles righthander Chris Tillman last Friday night for the 2,722nd hit of his career, eclipsing the team record held by Lou Gehrig. Jeter received a three-minute standing ovation as his teammates rushed the field to congratulate him.
Split Decision
Calling it the greatest shot of his career, Roger Federer went between his legs for a dazzling winner that set up match point against Novak Djokovic in Sunday's U.S. Open semifinals at Flushing Meadow. Federer put the victory away a point later but on Monday was denied his bid for a 16th major title (page 60).
Passing The Buckeyes
USC senior running back Stafon Johnson high-stepped into the end zone untouched from two yards out for the winning touchdown last Saturday in an 18--15 defeat of Ohio State in Columbus. Johnson's score, which came with 1:05 to play, was his second of the game and capped a 14-play, 86-yard drive.
Bad Hare Day
The Energizer Bunny couldn't seem to get going last Thursday at the Great Reno Balloon Race, even as a crew tried to light a fire under its grounded form. The race, now in its 28th year, is the largest free hot-air ballooning event in the nation, drawing more than 100 competitors and 140,000 spectators.
