From injuriessuffered in a one-car crash that claimed the life of another passenger, CharlieDavies, 23. The U.S. national soccer team forward suffered a lacerated bladder,facial fractures and broken bones in his right leg and left elbow; AshleyRoberta, 22, was killed in the accident. (The driver, whose name has not beenreleased, was taken to the hospital with unspecified injuries.) The wreckoccurred on Oct. 13, the day before the U.S. played its final World Cupqualifier, a 2--2 draw with Costa Rica. In the ninth minute of the game, fansat RFK Stadium held up cards with Davies's jersey number 9 in tribute, andteammate Jozy Altidore (above) wore a shirt honoring Davies under his jersey.Davies, who had emerged as one of the U.S.'s most dangerous attackers, could besidelined up to 12 months, all but ruling him out of next summer's WorldCup.

For nearly 10minutes by a coach's dispute with officials that prompted a rabbi to intervene,Sunday's exhibition game between Maccabi Tel Aviv and the New York Knicks.Maccabi coach Pini Gershon received an automatic ejection after picking up asecond technical foul in the third quarter of the game, which was played tobenefit Migdal Ohr, an Israeli orphanage. Gershon, however, refused to leavethe floor, which brought Rabbi Yitzchak Dovid Grossman, who runs Migdal Ohr,onto the court. Grossman pleaded with the refs to allow Gershon to stay. "Iexplained that this is not a regular game and the kids are watching," saidGrossman. "If you forgive him, I can speak to the children and say, 'Youalso forgive. If you have a fight, you forgive.' But he says this is the law,that you must obey." Gershon finally left the floor as the crowd cheered.The Knicks won 106--91.

Last Saturday inRio de Janeiro in a firefight between rival drug gangs, 12 people—including twopolice officers, whose helicopter was shot out of the sky. The incident raisedfresh concerns about security at the 2016 Olympics, which were awarded to Riotwo weeks ago. The shoot-out occurred in a slum five miles from a plannedOlympic venue. In addition to the dead, at least six people were wounded andseveral buses were set on fire. On Sunday officials addressed concerns thatthey will not be able to keep violence under control during the Games. "Wetold the International Olympic Committee that this won't be an easy thing, andthey know that," Rio state governor Sergio Cabral said. "We can put40,000 people on the streets—federal, state and municipal police—and pull offthe event."

Of natural causesat 58, former running back Cullen Bryant (above), who spent most of his 13-yearNFL career with the Rams. A second-round pick out of Colorado in 1973, the6'1", 234-pound bruiser was nimble enough to play tailback and returnkicks. (He averaged 26.3 yards per return in his career and had threetouchdowns.) "When he got that big body moving, it was something else,"former Rams coach Chuck Knox told the Los Angeles Times. "And he hadmuscles on top of muscles." Bryant's best season was 1980, when he ran for807 yards.

Of a stab woundinflicted during a fight outside an on-campus party, Connecticut cornerbackJasper Howard, 20. The incident occurred early Sunday following aschool-sponsored dance, hours after Howard had 11 tackles and recovered afumble in the Huskies' 38--25 win over Louisville. Last year Howard, a juniorfrom Miami, was second in the Big East in punt returns and led UConn with fourinterceptions. As of Monday no arrests had been made. "I know this,"said Connecticut coach Randy Edsall, "he loved UConn, he loved histeammates, he loved everything about this."

At age 76,longtime pro wrestler and manager Lou Albano (below). Captain Lou spearheadedthe so-called rock 'n' wrestling phenomenon in the 1980s, when pro wrestlingenjoyed its broadest crossover success. Sporting a goatee bound by rubberbands, Albano was one of the World Wrestling Federation's most recognizablecharacters. He managed 15 tag-team champions and appeared in several TV showsand music videos—most notably Cyndi Lauper's 1984 chart-topping Girls Just Wantto Have Fun, which led to Lauper's managing a female wrestler in a match airedlive on MTV.
